Caution: Writer Behaving Badly

Wednesday, February 28th, 2007

Want to know my favorite phrase in the world? “Requested material enclosed.” You can’t understand the value of those words until you’ve shopped around a project and gotten a few positive hits.
It makes me wonder if querying writers ever mislabel their unsolicited material as “requested” because they think they can put one over on an […]

A Subjective Business

Sunday, February 25th, 2007

Literary agent Nathan Bransford recently discussed what writers can learn from rejection letters. It’s easy to overanalyze rejections — visit any active message board about writing, and you’ll find posts picking apart form rejections line by line:

Interesting rumblings in the blogverse: Sylvia Day of Romancing the Blog suggests “adopting” promising new authors, writer Brandon Sanderson offers his take on purchasing hardcovers vs. paperbacks, and Jane of DearAuthor.com counters that readers’ relationships should be with books, not with authors.
I’m not about to argue one way or the other — it’s not like […]

Regarding Franklin

Monday, February 19th, 2007

So I met a zombie over the weekend.
He’s a pleasant enough guy, as far as zombies go. Surprisingly articulate. Highly motivated. Professional. Fussy. Looks a little like David Hyde Pierce, only, you know, undead. I presented him to a few friends and made the necessary introductions. They seem to like him. I like him, too.
Fond […]
